If you’re having problems starting your car, your first question is going to be “Why won’t it start?” The fact of the matter is, there are many reasons that your car may be having trouble turning over when you turn that key or press that switch. Problems with the ignition system are fairly common. Most motorists probably associate the problem with battery, alternator, or spark plugs, and little consideration is given to the starter. The best way to tell is with a diagnostic test to reveal where the issue is. If you live in Long Beach, Diamondhead, or Picayune, you can get this diagnostic service and starter system inspection at Premier Ford Waveland.

Your starter is a small motor within the engine that is powered by the battery. It is responsible for getting the vehicle started. Directly connected to the starter is the starter relay. This component of the starter system rests between the battery and the starter motor, where it transmits power. If your relay is faulty, damaged or just worn out, you will not be able to start your vehicle and you will likely need a tow.
Symptoms of Starter Problems
Something doesn’t sound right: This is one of the more common indicators; if you turn your key and you hear a clicking sound, it is usually associated with a starter problem. Although your starter can die silently with no noise whatsoever, it can also signal its demise with whirring or grinding noises.
Lights . . . ignition . . .nothing: This is a situation when you turn the key and dashboard lights come on, but the engine doesn’t fire up, which can also indicate a starter problem.
No engine crank: You turn the key, but the engine won’t rev up, not even after you attempt a jumpstart. If your engine won’t fire up, let one of our technicians take a look at your starter.
Smoking: Remember your starter system is an electrical system, and as such it is prone to electrical problems like short circuits and blown fuses. When you are having trouble starting your vehicle, you may fall into the trap of trying again and again. When you do this, you can cause your starter to overheat and possibly produce smoke from under your hood.
Oily: If you look under the hood and find your starter soaked in oil, then you may have more pressing problems than the car not starting. You have an oil leak and if it soaks your starter, it may not want to start.
Why Am I Having Starter Trouble?
Many things can cause starter problems, such as loose wiring, dirty or corroded connections at the starter, battery corrosion, damaged or worn-out starter system components, oil leaks, bad relays, and more.
